Actress Reese Witherspoon has apologized for her bad behavior when officers pulled her husband over just before the weekend and arrested him for DUI, according to news reports. Police stopped the couple early Friday in Atlanta, Georgia after police spotted his silver Ford Fusion weaving in and out of lanes, TMZ reports.
At that time, as officers were dealing with her husband, Creative Artists Agency agent Jim Toth, Witherspoon began acting up, saying to police: “Do you know my name? You’re about to find out who I am… You are going to be on national news.”
During Jim’s arrest, Reese allegedly became ornery, demonstrating visual and verbal frustration over how long it was taking to arrest her husband. At one point, she got out of her car and the officer ordered her back inside. When she got out a second time, he arrested her for disorderly conduct, a municipal ordinance. […]
As for Toth’s part of the arrest […] the officer in the report described him by saying his ‘eye lids were droopy’ and his eyes were ‘blood shot and watery.’ The officer said he smelled a ‘strong odor’ of alcohol coming from Toth.
TMZ reports that although Toth told police he had had only one drink, a Breathalizer test indicated his blood alcohol level was .139 (well over the legal limit in Georgia of .08).
The couple were briefly jailed before being released on bond, according to SFGate.com. Howard Gensler writes in Philly.com: “If he really had one drink, it was a half-gallon.”
SFGate.com quotes Witherspoon from a statement issued late Sunday:
‘Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.’
SFGate.com notes that the arrest did not stop Witherspoon from appearing in public, as she was in the spotlight Sunday night at the premiere of her film “Mud,” where she posed for pictures with co-star Matthew McConaughey; but she would not answer questions from reporters. A hearing was scheduled to have been held yesterday [Monday].
