Honey Boo Boo and Family Recovering From Car Crash
TV reality star Honey Boo Boo and her family are recovering from a car crash they were in Monday, reports Lesley Messer via Good Morning America for ABC News. Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson, the father of the 8-year-old star of the TLC series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, was driving an SUV in which Honey Boo Boo, her sisters Lauryn (“Pumpkin”) and Jessica (“Chubbs”), and the girls’ mother, “Mama June,” were passengers at the time.
The accident occurred in Milledgeville, Georgia, when a pickup truck hit the family’s vehicle as Sugar Bear made a left turn at a light, Bruna Nessif and Senta Scarborough write in an E! Online article appearing on NBC Bay Area. TMZ first reported the crash and said the truck that struck the Thompson family’s vehicle did not have its lights on, ABC News writes.
NBC writes that according to the police report, both drivers had a green light, and Sugar Bear said he did not see the truck coming because its headlights were not on. But the truck driver told police his lights were on an automatic setting, NBC writes, and since the vehicle was parked when police arrived, the authorities were not able to know whether or not the lights were on.
Seth Cagle, the 19-year-old driver of the pickup truck, told E! News:
‘We both had the green light. He [Sugar Bear] made a left hand turn which crossed the lane and I was traveling and that is when I struck him because he cut me off. He made a left hand turn when crossing on-coming traffic — that is when he struck me and I struck him. I was headed straight.’
He continued, ‘There happened to be an ambulance around right when the accident happened, and one of the girls got checked out and they left. I don’t know which one it was. The paramedics left when the police got there and we all stayed until the police arrived and then told us we could go.’
E! News reported that the family went to the hospital after the accident, complaining of back pain and shortness of breath, NBC writes, noting that Mama June had not been wearing her seatbelt. TMZ wrote that Sugar Bear has a contusion on his back as a result of the accident, and that Mama June suffered back and neck sprains, ABC News writes. Honey Boo Boo, whose real name is Alana Thompson, hit her head on a window, and Pumpkin has chest bruises and is experiencing panic attacks, ABC News reports.
ABC News quotes Mama June as saying on Tuesday through a publicist:
‘It was really scary for us, since it was the first time any of us had ever been in a wreck.
‘We are definitely really sore today, but our top priority is to celebrate Pumpkin’s birthday,’ Mama June added. ‘She turned 14 today, and no matter how sore we feel, we are going to go out and celebrate.’
The NBC article, which contains additional reporting by Lindsay Good, says that both cars had moderate damage as a result of the accident. According to the police report, Sugar Bear’s SUV received dents, scratches and crush damage to the front grill and driver’s-side headlight, and a crumpled hood; whereas Cagle’s truck sustained cracks and dents to the front bumper and grill-area damage. Part of the front bumper had been broken off Cagle’s truck as well, NBC reports.
Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, which first aired in August 2012, will begin its third season on January 16, according to Wikipedia. It stars Honey Boo Boo, who is a child beauty-pageant contestant, and her family. The little girl and her family first became famous on TLC’s reality series Toddlers & Tiaras.
