Country Music Star Randy Travis Arrested for DWI
Grammy-award winning country singer Randy Travis was released on bond Wednesday morning after being arrested for driving while intoxicated and felony retaliation late Tuesday night in northern Texas, according to news reports. Travis posted $21,500, of which $20,000 was for the felony charge, Kevin Dolak writes for ABCNews.com. CNN says that according to the sheriff’s office, the bail was posted in cash by an acquaintance of Travis.
As Aaron Leitko writes in The Washington Post:
Responding to reports of ‘A man laying in the roadway,’ police allegedly found the country singer, 53, naked and reeking of alcohol on a remote stretch of highway in northern Texas just before midnight. According to authorities, the singer had driven his car off of the highway and into a construction zone.
Police said Travis took a nap at the side of the road after his black 1998 Pontiac Trans Am drove off the north side of a two-lane highway west of Tioga and struck several barricades in a construction zone, according to Michael Martinez and David Ariosto, writing for CNN. Dolak writes that when police arrested him, Travis allegedly threatened to shoot and kill the troopers. Travis was brought to the police station naked, Dolak writes, and when he exited the jailhouse, he was barefoot and wearing a blue paper jail suit (as you can see in the news video at the bottom of this post).
As CNN writes, back in Feburary, Travis was arrested for public intoxication while sitting in his car in front of a Baptist church in Sanger, Texas, after the Super Bowl, and pleaded no contest. For that, Travis paid a $264 fine and was placed on a 90-day probation period, which expires on September 23. “Travis’ alleged offense this week won’t impact his probation in Sanger because the incident occurred in another county in Texas, [Sanger court administrator Christy] Punches said,” reports CNN.
Travis “has sold more than 20 million records, has won seven Grammy Awards, 10 Academy of Country Music statuettes, 10 American Music Awards, seven Music City News awards, five Country Music Association honors and eight Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association, according to his website,” CNN notes. ABC News says “The ‘Forever and Ever Amen’ singer’s legal troubles come after some personal ones, namely a messy divorce in 2010 from his wife and former manager.”
