Attention on Bus Crashes After NY Accidents
Bus crashes have dominated the news recently. From the Colorado accident earlier this month to the two tragic bus accidents in New York, these crashes have raised numerous safety questions from the media, the public, and government.
Sen. Schumer of New York, whom I’ve written about recently because of his push to tighten regulation of rental cars, is once more becoming vocal about the intersection of safety and regulation.

On the following Monday night there was another serious accident involving a bus. This one headed from New York to Pennsylvania. That crash killed two, including the driver.
This is not a new issue. I remember the “Mother’s Day Accident” in New Orleans back in 1999. The crash killed 22 people. It’s hardly shocking that it would come up in news coverage on these recent tragedies. After all, it was the incident responsible for the formation of a federal department meant to watchdog these things. Bruce Albert, a reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports,
After the 1999 New Orleans bus crash, Congress passed legislation creating the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. But the agency, under pressure from bus and trucking companies, delayed making many of the changes advocated by the National Transportation Safety Board, a situation Obama administration officials say they are trying to rectify.
The problems go back even further than that, as The Boston Globe points out in its own coverage:
New rules will also be needed for the buses themselves — and Congress may need to impose them, since federal regulators have failed to act on some common-sense recommendations. For instance, the National Transportation Safety Board recommended requiring seat belts on buses — in 1968. Congress should also mandate ejection-proof windows and roofs that can withstand rollovers, measures contained in bipartisan Senate legislation introduced earlier this month, just days before the crash.
Between this and the recent issues in the rental car industry there seems to be potential for a good deal of new legislation on road safety. The severity of these accidents is focusing public attention on the subject, and Sen. Schumer may find himself joined by others.
