Fatal Daycare Accident: Toddler Run Over in Driveway
Tragedy struck a licensed in-home daycare center in Thornton, CO, recently, when a child was run over and killed in an accident by the woman who ran the center.
Howard Pankratz, a reporter for The Denver Post, brings us some details:
Barnes identified the woman as 34-year-old Robyn Miller and the victim as Riley Lawyer, also of Thornton.
Miller had just loaded children into the vehicle Thursday afternoon and started backing up, believing all were inside, Barnes said.
As she backed up, she heard a bump, stopped the car and found she had hit Riley, the police spokesman said.
She immediately called 911 and tried to administer first aid to the child, Barnes said.
The one-and-a-half-year-old died from the injuries he has sustained. Thornton Police spokesman Matt Barnes reports that Miller is “emotionally devastated,” and has been cooperative with authorities.
The Colorado Department of Human Services reports that Miller has a license for up to six children in her care since 2004. In that time, there have been no complaints, child abuse incidents, or critical incidents. Police state that neither drugs nor alcohol are considered factors.
