Fatal Accident North of Nunn
Last Thursday, at about 7:15 pm, according to Colorado State Patrol spokesperson Heather Cobbler, a van driven by Scott Barnhart, 43, of Nunn, was fatally struck by a tractor trailer near the intersection of U.S. 85 and Weld County Road, Colorado. The accident was first reported in The Denver Post, but a few further details have since come to light.
A staff report from The Greeley Tribune provides a few more details on Barnhart’s death:
The patrol said Barnhart was the driver of a 1990 Ford van that was east bound on Weld County Road 100 and failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with U.S. 85 at just before 8 p.m. When Barnhart entered the intersection, his vehicle collided with a 2009 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Arthur Marez, 51, of Fresno, Calif.
According to patrol reports, Barnhart was ejected from his van after striking the left side fuel tank of the truck. He died at the scene. The truckjackknifed during the accident and blocked both lanes of U.S. 85 for some time. Reports state that Barnhart was not wearing a seat belt.
Marez did not suffer any injuries. State troopers report that alcohol and/or drugs are suspected as possible contributing factors in the crash.
