Fatal Colorado Accident Between Truck and Amtrak Train
Car accidents are dangerous enough when it is merely two cars involved. When one of the vehicles is a train, however, a collision is much deadlier, as one resident of Trinidad, Colorado discovered at 10 AM last Friday. Las Animas County was the scene of the tragic accident between a pickup truck and an Amtrak train on County Road 75.1 just outside of Trinidad.
KKTV brings us the story:
Investigators say a 2003 Dodge Dakota was headed north, when it failed to stop for an approaching train at a railroad crossing. The passenger train collided with the right side of the truck.
Authorities say after the collision the train dragged the pickup truck nearly a half-mile before coming to a stop
The 55-year-old male driver of the pickup died on scene and has now been identified as Carl Veltri of Trinidad. Investigators say he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, but still suffered fatal injuries.
Of the 303 passengers on the train when it collided with Mr. Veltri’s truck, none have so far reported any personal injuries. The Colorado State Patrol do not consider alcohol, drugs or lack of visibility at the railroad crossing to be contributing factors in the accident at this time. They do note, however, that the intersection does not have crossing arms — only signs posted that say “Railroad Crossing.” They also note the lack of skid marks at the scene of the tragedy.
The fact that Mr. Veltri was wearing his seat-belt did little to mitigate the severity of the accident. His truck was pushed almost half a mile by the Amtrak train before it was able to stop.
This area has seen more than its share of deadly car accidents, as Randy Woock, staff writer for The Trinidad Times, reports:
The accident was the sixth fatality accident in Las Animas County in the past 12 months. An Aguilar man was killed in a single-vehicle accident on a county road south of the town in early June. A driver and passenger were both killed in an accident about seven miles north of Trinidad on I-25 in April. A vehicular accident claimed the life of a Trinidad man in March. Another Trinidad man was killed in February when the vehicle he was driving went over a cliff. A Walsenburg teenager was killed in a single-car accident on I-25 north of Trinidad in October
One should always be extra careful when driving a vehicle through a railroad crossing. Even though it might seem as though there is more than enough room to make it safely across, you never know when your car might stall or get stuck on the tracks. A motor vehicle simply has no chance when it collides with a train at full speed.
