Deadly Head-On Car Accident on I-70 in Colorado
The Wheat Ridge Police Department started receiving calls about a black Nissan Sentra at 2:46 a.m. last Friday. According to Randy Barber, 2008 Emmy winner in the 9News interactive department, one caller told police the Sentra was moving erratically and the driver might be intoxicated.
At 3:25 a.m. another call about a black Nissan Sentra came in. This time it was reported that the Sentra was going down the highway against traffic, eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-70 near Kipling. One minute after that, a two-car accident was reported.
26 year-old Heydi Margarita Hauchi, the Sentra’s driver, and 65 year-old Woon Baek were both killed in the accident. Barber brings us some more details:
Investigators say Hauchi hit a Volvo, driven by Baek, while going the wrong way on I-70. Hauchi was ejected and died on scene.
Police say Baek had gotten out of his car to help and was hit by a semi truck. Baek also died at the scene. Three passengers from the the Volvo were transported to the hospital with injuries but the semi driver was uninjured.
Hauchi (Hau Chi) had been convicted of a DWAI on this same date two years earlier. Kieran Nicholson, staff reporter for The Denver Post, reports:
On June 11, 2008, two years to the day of this morning’s fatal crash, Hau Chi was arrested for DUI, among other violations. The DUI charge was dismissed and she was found guilty of DWAI. As part of her sentence in that case, Hau Chi was ordered to take an alcohol education class.
In addition, Nicholson writes that a Colorado State Patrol car was also hit while investigating the scene of the crash, adding one more auto accident to the tally. Fortunately, no one was reported injured in this one.
The article also has audio recordings of two of the 911 calls regarding the Sentra that evening.
